Dr. Cathy Zhang , MD 

After completing 13 years of education and training, Dr. Cathy Zhang MD is proud to return to her home state of Louisiana to serve her community. Dr. Zhang is ACGME accredited fellowship trained and double board certified in both Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. She believes in multimodal care, meaning her approach focuses on both body and mind to improve your quality of life. Dr. Zhang’s balanced perspective is one that she would use for her friends and family and wants to bring that same approach home to the people of Louisiana. Dr. Zhang will work with you hand in hand to better understand your health needs and discover ways to not only treat, but also prevent further disease processes. Because at the Louisiana Pain Institute, you are not just a patient, you are family.

Background

Dr. Zhang first earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh with a dual major in Neuroscience and Business. She then pursued her medical degree at the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans where she earned a distinctive honor award for outstanding student in Medical Microbiology. Afterward, she completed her Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Residency training at the University of Alabama in Birmingham where she was recognized early on for her clinical excellence in Pain Medicine and awarded the prestigious J. Antonio Aldrete Award for excellence in Pain Medicine.  During this time, she also focused on patient safety, continuous quality improvement, and graduate medical education and served in numerous organizational leadership positions. Dr. Zhang then went on for specialized training with a Chronic Pain Medicine Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where she learned a multidisciplinary approach to pain management by working with Anesthesiologists, Neurologists, Surgeons, Psychiatrists, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctors. Dr. Zhang is now a double board-certified Anesthesiologist and Pain Medicine specialist. She specializes in both fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided injections, neuromodulation and advanced surgical techniques like spinal cord stimulation, Vertiflex procedures for spinal stenosis, vertebral augmentation with Kyphoplasty and Spinejack, both fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided injections, peripheral nerve stimulation, peripheral nerve ablations, sympathetic blocks, and joint injections.

Dr. Zhang now lives on the North Shore of Louisiana with her fiancé, John and their golden retriever, Jasper. She enjoys being active and learning new sports. Most recently, you may find her taking tennis lessons on the local courts. One of her favorite activities is hiking, and is always looking for her next hiking adventure. She also enjoys being out on the waters and fishing- you should ask her about her latest catch!
