Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I get scheduled for a procedure?

While procedure appointments do not take long to schedule, please realize that sometimes we may need to obtain a prior authorization from your insurance company. In addition, Dr. Zhang may be required to order further testing prior to your procedure to make sure it can be done as safely as possible. We always have our patients’ best interests in mind.

What do I need to do to prepare for my procedure?

When it comes to the day of your procedure, we don’t want you to worry! We prioritize making the process as easy as possible for you. Dr. Zhang will go over what to expect during your clinic visit, and again on the day of your procedure if needed. In addition, one of our staff members will give you detailed instructions prior to your procedure. Depending on the type of procedure you are having done, we may have you hold certain medications, stop eating or drinking at midnight the night before, bring a driver, or obtain additional imaging or blood work prior to your procedure. If you still have any questions, feel free to call our office or contact us through the patient portal and we will get back to you in a timely manner.

Will my procedure hurt?

Dr. Zhang treats every patient with the utmost care and attention to detail, including patient comfort during any procedure. She will talk you through the whole process prior to the procedure so you know what to expect. Then during the procedure, she will make sure you are as comfortable as possible with the help of numbing medications.

Are there risks involved with my procedure?

The simple answer is yes- there are always risks involved with any procedure. Some interventions are less risky than others. If Dr. Zhang believes that a procedure is indicated, she will have a in depth consultation with you that will include a discussion about risks and benefits. Dr. Zhang will go over in detail the specific risks that may be associated with your particular procedure. In general, some risks involve bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding structures, and funny reaction to any of the medications used.

Do I have to miss a lot of work after a procedure?

Although we do recommend patients to take it easy after a procedure, many patients are able to go back to work the same day if needed! In general, we recommend no vigorous activity (running, jumping, playing sports) and no heavy lifting (anything above a carton of milk). However, every procedure is different, and every patient is different. We will make sure to go over discharge instructions and expectations with you at every appointment!

Do I need an MRI if I have back or neck pain?

If you are having chronic back with radiating leg pain or neck pain with shooting pain down your arm, if there has been a recent decline in walking ability, or if there is weakness or numbness in your arms or legs, a MRI is often ordered as part of your diagnostic work up.

What should I do if I think I am having side effects to my medication?

If you believe that you are having side effects after being started on a NEW medication, then discontinue that medication and please call our office as soon as possible or send us a message through the patient portal. If you believe that you are having side effects after starting a DIFFERENT DOSE of your existing medication, go back to your original dose. Please call our office as soon as possible or send us a message through the patient portal to let us know.

In general, if you feel like you are having any severe shortness of breath, chest pain, increased weakness, bowel or bladder incontinence, go immediately to your nearest emergency room. While these severe symptoms may not actually be a medication side effect, these symptoms can be a sign of another serious medical condition.

Does Dr. Zhang accept my insurance?

Every insurance company and insurance plan is different, so we are happy to help check with your insurance company prior to your appointment. Please call our offices so we may assist you further.
