Neck Pain Q&A

What are the symptoms of neck pain?

Neck pain is a common ailment with a wide range of causes and varying severity. Common neck pain-related symptoms include:

  • Neck muscle spasms and tightness
  • Headaches
  • Decreased ability to turn your head
  • Pain that gets worse when you hold your head in one position for a long time

Not sure if it’s time to get it checked out? Visit Dr. Zhang if your neck pain:

  • Is severe
  • Continues for several days without relief
  • Spreads down your arms or legs

You should also head to Dr. Zhang if your neck pain is accompanied by headache, numbness, weakness, or tingling.

What causes neck pain?

Common causes of neck pain include:

  • Compressed nerves in the spine
  • A herniated disc in the neck
  • A car accident or sports injury that causes whiplash and soft tissue damage
  • Osteoarthritis and worn joints
  • Diseases like cancer, meningitis, and rheumatoid arthritis

You can also get neck pain from muscle strains, especially from activities like looking at your phone or working at the computer. You can prevent this type of neck pain with small changes, like improving your posture, positioning your computer at eye level, and intermittently stretching.

How do you treat neck pain?

If your neck pain doesn’t resolve on its own, if it’s especially painful, or if you want to get to the underlying cause and treat it, Dr. Zhang offers numerous services, such as:

Epidural steroid injections

Epidural steroid injections contain steroids like cortisone and an anesthetic. The steroid decreases inflammation around your nerve roots, and the anesthetic numbs the local area.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation provides neck pain relief by heating nerve tissue and stopping it from sending pain signals.

During RFA, Dr. Zhang inserts a thin needle into the area where you feel pain, then delivers a microelectrode to the tissue. She sends a small amount of radiofrequency to the electrode through the needle. This heats up the nerve tissue to interfere with the delivery of pain signals.

Sympathetic blocks

Sympathetic blocks reduce and eliminate pain that originates with the sympathetic nervous system (SNS).

When the SNS, which normally regulates your “fight or flight” response, goes into overdrive, it fires off pain throughout the body. To disrupt this, sympathetic block injections numb the cluster of nerves causing the dysfunction.

In addition to procedures like these, Dr. Zhang may recommend over-the-counter pain medication, physical therapy, or in more extreme cases, surgery.

Neck pain doesn’t have to be forever. Take a step toward a pain-free life by booking a consultation with Dr. Zhang at Louisiana Pain Institute online or over the phone today.
