Headaches & Migraines Q&A

What are the different types of headaches?

A headache is a headache, right? Wrong. There are many types of headaches that can plague you at any given time. The most common types include:

Tension headache

Tension headaches are one of the most common causes of head pain, frequently brought on by stress. They typically cause a dull, aching sensation all over the head.

They may also occur in tandem with tension-related tenderness or sensitivity around the shoulder, scalp, forehead, or neck muscles. Tension headaches can be chronic.

Cluster headache

Cluster headaches, among the least common types of headaches, cause severe burning or piercing pain. Usually, they occur behind or around one eye or on one side of the face.

Other symptoms include redness, flushing, sweating, swelling, nasal congestion, and tear production on the same side of the head as the headache.

With cluster headaches, you may experience up to three headaches a day for a “cluster” of time, a few weeks or months, then go long stretches without pain.

Sinus headache

With a sinus headache, you feel pain in your forehead, under your eyes, and around your nose. You may be prone to sinus headaches if you suffer from allergies.

What is a migraine?

A migraine causes intense, pulsing, throbbing pain from deep in your head. Usually localized to one side of the head, migraines can last for days at a time and negatively impact your daily life.

Migraines can also cause nausea or vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people also experience a pre-migraine symptom called an aura. During an aura, you experience visual disturbances like flashing lights, blind spots, shimmering lights, zigzag lines, or stars.

How do you treat headaches and migraines?

Depending on your headache type, your symptoms, and your medical history, Dr. Zhang may recommend any of a number of treatment options for your head pain, such as:

  • Botox® injections
  • Facial nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Sphenopalatine blocks

Facial injections work by blocking pain signals from traveling from your nerves to your brain. Many also include an anesthetic to help with immediate pain.

What happens during Botox treatment for migraines?

Botox injections work particularly well in treating and preventing migraines. During a treatment session, Dr. Zhang injects small amounts of Botox around the pain fibers associated with your migraines.

The Botox blocks pain transmission signals, so that you can enjoy almost immediate relief. Depending on how well you respond to treatment, you can see Dr. Zhang every six months for additional injections.

Are you tired of headaches and migraines holding you back? Treatment with Dr. Zhang might be just what you need to live pain-free again. To learn more, contact Louisiana Pain Institute online or over the phone to set up a consultation today.
